Quilt
Julie Stillwell writes ‘The quilt is a signature quilt, meaning that the design incorporates actual signatures that are either left as written or as in the case of the Princess Patricia quilt, embroidered over to preserve them. The quilt dates from 1917 and was made as part of a fundraiser for the British War Relief Fund. It can be presumed that the names on the quilt were attendees at a fundraiser ball and maybe each square represents a table at the ball.
Each square of the quilt contains many names, some hard to decipher but the names on the quilt include DBE Founder, Mrs. Josephine M. Langstaff and a famous entertainer of the times, (Sir) Harry Lauder. Other names on the quilt include family groups: The Young’s; The Harmon’s: The Whitney’s to name a few. Julia Chance signed her name and added ‘An Old Fashioned Girl’; an M. R. Fairfax added his regiment, 7thNew York; Mr. Louis Livingston Seaman signed as President of the British War Relief Fund, America.’
